According to Dr. Pilla, baby root canals are necessary when a cavity in a baby tooth is deep enough to affect part of the nerve. During a baby root canal, Dr. Pilla removes the impacted part of the nerve and the remaining surface is covered. Dr. Pilla explains that a baby root canal is necessary to maintain the health of a baby tooth and the supporting gum tissue and bone. Composite fillings are made of either plastic or glass and closely resemble the natural shade of teeth. Composite fillings may be necessary when a tooth is either decayed or disfigured, says Dr. Pilla.
Dr. Pilla says that white crowns are used to strengthen and cover decayed baby teeth at the front of the mouth. Like composite fillings, white crowns are a similar color to natural teeth, so they are cosmetically pleasing. However, she adds, white crowns can become discolored over time, and may need to be replaced before the baby tooth it is covering falls out.
Dr. Pilla says that dental extractions, more commonly known as getting a tooth pulled, are one of the most commonly-performed procedures in a dental office. Dental extractions are necessary when teeth are decayed or damaged due to a cavity that they cannot be treated. Once it is determined that a dental extraction is necessary, an X-ray will be performed to further assess the condition of the child's teeth. The extraction process is performed under a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort.
Following the removal of the affected tooth, children will likely experience some pain, which can be treated with antibiotics or by applying ice to the area.
