Spinal tumors are abnormal masses of tissue that are located within or surrounding the spinal cord or spinal column. Metastatic spinal tumors usually form as a result of cancer that has spread to the spinal area.

Metastatic tumors are often called "secondary" tumors, since they result from cancer and spread from one area to the spine.

While some spinal tumors may require open surgery, nonsurgical treatments can often be effective for patients. Dr. Lipani says some of the most common treatments for these tumors include chemotherapy, over-the-counter or prescription medication, radiation therapy, and radiosurgery.
Dr. Lipani says that radiosurgery is a non-invasive treatment option that uses highly-focused beams of radiation to destroy stubborn tumors, without damaging any surrounding areas of tissue. He adds that this type of treatment is becoming extremely popular among patients, since it requires no lengthy recovery time or hospital stay, and is a safe alternative to traditional surgery.
