As more models of reliable, cheap laptops become available on the market for less than $600, it seems consumers are spending money on them instead of the more costly options in the $1,500 - $2,000 price bracket.
"Eight years ago, a typical laptop would have cost well over a thousand dollars," said Donovan Tenby of CheaperLaptop.com. "Here in 2010, cheap notebooks can now be purchased for under 600 dollars, with specifications to satisfy all but the most passionate 3D gamers. Sure, we'd all rather have a top of the range aluminum Macbook Pro or quad-core Thinkpad on our laps, but in tough economic times wallet straps and purse strings are tightening fast. Prices are dropping even lower in the netbook market with great deals to be had for under $200. We may see a sub-50 dollar netbook in the next few years."

They are following the common practice of cutting back wherever possible and doing more with less. Consumers are using the no frills units to accomplish basic daily "chores" on their computers. These include checking email, communicating through social media accounts, Youtube viewing, and typing up simple word processing documents for homework assignments or business agreements.
