Early Detection is the Best Prevention- KCUC Celebrates Men’s Health MonthFeatured PR

KCUC advocates regular screening to prevent diseases. Prostate cancer can be completely cured with early detection and timely treatment. Many other problems can be screened for and treated based on symptoms.

Regular screening and screening after the detection of symptoms, helps to prevent several problems like Low-T and diseases such as prostate cancer.

"Low-T refers to a condition where men have low levels of testosterone. Men with Low-T often experience reduced sex drive, less energy, have less muscle mass and are continually depressed or irritable. If a patient experiences these symptoms, we recommend that they get screened for Low-T," says Dr. Christian Hettinger, an Urologist at KCUC. A detailed video about the issue is given here (http://www.kcurology.com/news/132-testosterone-therapy-for-men.html).

"Prostate Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. One in six men may develop prostate cancer and one in 36 will die of the disease. Early detection through PSA testing can cure cancer and prevent these deaths," says Dr. Justin Albani, an Urologist at KCUC.

But the American College of Physicians has discouraged PSA testing and even questioned the screening protocol. The American Association of Clinical Urologists however encourages its members to discuss with patients about the benefits of screening for the Early Detection of Prostate Cancer.

"KCUC along with The Urology Specialists, P.C. endorses the stand taken by the AACU. The ACP's stand is based on the assumption that overtreatment could be a risk. While this fear is real, it should not affect screening. Thus, the question should be to treat, not whether to screen," adds Dr. Albani. In fact, the National Cancer Institute reports a 40% decrease in prostate cancer mortality rate since PSA testing become common.
