We perhaps think of hair loss as a modern problem, but it is something that people have always been concerned about even in ancient times. Since the beginning of recorded history, men and women across the world have been looking for that elusive hair loss cure.

In ancient Egypt, hair loss was considered to equate with a loss of virility. Ses, the mother of a Greek pharaoh used toes of a dog, refuse of dates and hoof of an ass as hair loss treatments or cures. According to the ancient papyrus, to resuscitate the hair, a man or woman should pound the beans of the castor-oil plant, soak the paste in oil and then massage his/her skull with the mixture.

In Ancient Greece, Hippocrates, the Father of Modern Medicine, tried many medical solutions for his own progressive hair loss. He recommended a mixture of cumin, pigeon droppings, horse radish and beetroot or nettles. Hippocrates was the first to describe an effective surgical solution to hair loss. He was first to observe that castration can prevent hair loss. We now know that castrations before or shortly after puberty reduce testosterone and DHT levels in the blood to such a degree that genetic hair loss is prevented. However, a study from the Duke University concluded that although castration may be a cure, it is not commercially acceptable.

In ancient Rome, hair continued to be a symbol of power and virility. This presented a problem for Julius Caesar, whose hairline was receding even as his empire was expanding. He developed some cosmetic solutions to his hair loss problem. First he began growing it long in the back and combing it straight forward over his bald spot. This technique didn’t seem to work, so Caesar then took to wearing a laurel wreath around his head to hide his hair loss. The trademark wreath soon became a symbol of power and virility.

In France, over 1,600 years later, King Louis XIII began wearing a full wig to camouflage his thinning hair. Soon, other members of the court followed his example and wigs became symbols of power. The height, length, and bulk of wigs increased with each decade, and giant powdered wigs soon became the fashion in all French courts.

In 1800’s, this was the heyday of the "snake oil" salesmen, bottles of hair loss treatment cures with names like "Mrs. Allen’s World Hair Restorer","East India Oil Hair Restoration," "Imperial Hair Regenerator" were sold to hopeful buyers seeking a cure for their hair loss.

Only in more recent times has research finally been able to analyze the problems and bring some help to hair loss sufferers. Now, in the 21th century, there are a wide range of effective hair loss treatment products and procedures available that are clinically proven to prevent and even to some extent reverse hair loss.
