August 17 - The Medical Transcription Blog, a resource for medical coders and transcriptionists, announces that the job growth in the field is expected to remain strong through the next decade. In general, medical transcriptionists convert dictations made by physicians and other healthcare professionals by listening to and transcribing them into medical reports, correspondence, or other administrative documents. Pay for this role can range from $30,000 to $50,000 per year, with certified transcriptionists receiving approximately $7,500 per year more than their non-certified counterparts.

The qualification of certified medical transcriptionist (CMT) is given by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI). An eligibility requirement for certification is two years’ of experience as a medical transcriptionist in an acute care setting as well as passing AHDI’s CMT exam. The recommended budgeted time for the exam by AHDI is four hours. The exam is administered nationally in testing centers year round. There is an exam application fee of $10, and an exam fee of $195 for AHDI members and $275 for non-members.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), there were roughly 105,200 medical transcriptionists in the U.S. in 2008, a figure that is projected to grow 11% per year through 2018. Employers often prefer candidates who are certified as CMTs. According to the DOL, roughly 36% of medical transcriptionists work in hospitals, and another 23% work in physicians’ offices. Others work for diagnostic laboratories, outpatient care centers, and other healthcare service offices and locations. Transcriptionists can also work remotely from a home office as well and can enjoy flexibility in their hours of work.

The Medical Transcription Blog offers a variety of resources to both medical transcriptionists as well as those interested in a career in the field, as well as resources for study and certification. The site also offers a free e-book once you subscribe as well as a free daily newsletter with powerful tips. In addition, resources and tips for getting started setting up your own medical transcription business are available on the site.
