A flat, toned abdomen is something nearly everyone aspires to have. Unfortunately, even individuals of normal body weight and size can suffer from having loose, protruding skin around their abdomen. This loose skin can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, pregnancy, prior surgery, or significant changes in weight. This issue can be corrected by an abdominoplasty, better known as the "tummy tuck."

Dr. Charlotte Ann Rhee, of LI Plastic Surgery in Huntington Station, New York, says that the tummy-tuck procedure is extremely effective for removing excess body fat and skin, and for tightening up the muscles. "The tummy tuck is currently an extremely popular procedure in the United States," says Dr. Rhee, "The procedure gives patients a flatter, more pleasing abdomen and waist."

Dr. Rhee says that the best candidates for a tummy tuck are otherwise healthy patients who want to address the appearance of loose skin, or pockets of fat, that have not responded well to diet or exercise. "The procedure is especially useful for women with stretched skin or muscles following pregnancy," Dr. Rhee says, "The procedure can also help older patients who are slightly obese, and who have lost some elasticity from their skin. Generally, I recommend that women who plan to become pregnant in the future delay undergoing this surgery, since becoming pregnant in the future can disrupt the results of the tummy tick."

According to Dr. Rhee, the tummy tuck procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and takes about two to five hours to complete. Dr. Rhee will make two incisions during the surgery, one around the navel, and another from hipbone to hipbone close to the pubic area. The skin from the abdominal muscles will be separated and then pulled back together and sitched in place, creating a narrower waist. Excess skin will also be removed, and the navel will be reattached in a natural position. Incisions are then closed, and sterile surgical dressings will be applied over the sutured areas. Dr. Rhee explains that recovery from the surgery will vary by patient, and a complete recovery may take several months.

Dr. Rhee works closely with each patient to determine their specific needs, and what they would like to accomplish from the procedure. "A tummy tuck is highly-personalized, not a 'one-size-fits-all' type of procedure," Dr. Rhee explains, "By listening to our patients, we are able to provide them with a procedure that completes meets their needs, and helps restore their ideal body."
