Osteoblastoma is a rare, bengin bone tumor that usually develops in the bones surrounding the spine, as well as in the legs and feet. Since little is known about what causes this tumor to form, finding the right treatment can seem intimidating. Fortunately, Drs. Mollabashy and Gilbert of Greater Dallas Orthapaedics are on hand to treat both malignant and benign bone tumors.

Osteoblastoma are slow-growing tumors, which break up healthy surrounding bones, and produce a type of abnormal bone material, known as "osteoid." Osteoid material then builds up around the normal bone. Because osteoid is weaker than normal bones, the bone surrounding the tumor is extremely susceptible to fractures, and can break with only a minor injury. Because osteoblastomas are slow to grow, a patient may experience 2 years of symptoms before the tumor is diagnosed. Some symptoms include severe leg pain or weakness, back pains, and muscle spasms.

Since osteoblastoma almost always requires surgery to remove the tumors, and preserve function in the surrounding limbs, Drs. Mollabashy and Gilbert work closely with each of their patients before and after treatment. Prior to surgery, imaging tests, such as X-rays and CT scans, will be ordered to visualize and identify the precise location of the tumor.

When it comes to surgery, patients have several options. Two common options include spinal curettage and bone grafting, a procedure in which the tumor is scraped out of the bone, or marginal resection, which is when the section of bone where the tumor is located is completely removed. Because some cases of osteoblastoma have developed into malignant bone tumors, the objective of the surgery is to remove as much of the tumor as possible. Following surgery, patients may need several weeks to make a full recovery.

While undergoing surgery for any kind of bone disease is never easy, Dr. Gilbert and Dr. Mollabashy are both experts in the field. With a vast amount of experience and expertise, these surgeons have built one of the most highly-respected practices in the country, and one of the few practices in Texas dedicated to providing comprehensive care for patients suffering from bone disease.
