Pacific Dermatology Introduces New Max-G IPL Laser

Phototherapy has hit its stride. With doctors of all walks employing the laser therapy to treat everything from acne to cancer cells. Some doctors, like board certified dermatologist Dr. Jennifer Reichel, of Pacific Dermatology & Cosmetic Center, use the technology of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to treat acne, signs of aging and pre-cancerous lesions.
"IPL is so versatile," notes Dr. Reichel, who offers photofacial rejuvenation at her practice. "We can improve the signs of sun damage, redness and brown spots on the face, hands and body with minimal recuperation time," says the doctor.
Dynamic photofacial rejuvenation is a non-abrasive and non-invasive rejuvenation of the skin using IPL. Recently Pacific Dermatology and Cosmetic Center acquired the state-of-the-art Max-G IPL laser to treat sunspots, broken blood vessels, Rosacea and redness on the face, neck, chests, arms and hands.
The IPL system treats skin with a large spectrum of wavelengths. A number of different hand pieces are used to filter light from various parts of the spectrum. Each band of the spectrum has a wavelength that is best-suited for a specific treatment, such as sun spot removal and vessel clearance. The IPL wand emits pulses of light into the skin-- the light is then absorbed by the pigment in brown spots and the blood in vessels, and converted to heat. The heat dissolves the cells that create the pigment and shrinks the vessels causing the spots to virtually disappear.
It can take up 4-6 treatments spaced about 3 weeks apart to see desired results. Dr. Reichel warns that the procedure is most effective when the patient has their natural pigment—not to be tan. As a tan, real or artificial can interfere with the procedure and results.
Immediately after treatment the patient may experience feelings similar to having mild sunburn—which should subside in 2-24 hours.
"Brown spots will darken after treatment, and then be naturally shed from the skin within a week or two," notes Dr. Reichel. A moisturizer sunscreen combination will be applied immediately after the treatment, and Dr. Reichel suggests that patients keep skin protected with sunscreen throughout the duration of the IPL photofacial treatment sessions.

Dr. Jennifer Reichel is the founder and director of Pacific Dermatology & Cosmetic Center in Seattle.
