As one of today's top surgical procedures, breast lifts can help rejuvenate breasts that have drooped over time due to the natural aging process, pregnancy, heredity, and more. While traditional breast lift, or mastopexy, techniques have proven to be effective, they can sometimes leave excess scarring. Stony Brook's Dr. Mark Epstein recently sat down to discuss how short scar techniques can benefit patients undergoing breast lift procedures.

"For many women, mammary ptosis is a major cosmetic concern," explains Dr. Epstein. "Defined as a drooping of the breast, it's typically brought on by the body's natural aging process. Breast lifts serve to correct ptosis, working to restore a more ideal, contoured appearance to a woman's breasts."

Detailing what exactly a breast lift procedure entails, Dr. Epstein offers, "There are a number of different techniques used in these procedures that are dependent on factors like breast size, degree of sagging, shape, and more. An incision is initially made around the areola, and the breast tissue is lifted and reshaped to provide a more appealing contour. Any excess skin is removed, and stitches are used to help support the breasts."

"In traditional breast lift procedures, 'lollipop' and 'anchor-shaped' incisions are used around the areola," offers Dr. Epstein. While effective, I was unhappy with the amount of scarring. Using short scar techniques, the amount of scarring is greatly reduced, helping patients to greater appreciate the rejuvenated appearance of their breasts."

Offering his final thoughts on why patients should explore breast lift procedures, Dr. Epstein concluded with this: "Mammary ptosis is a condition that can cause women to lose a great deal of confidence in their bodies. Those who decide to undergo breast lifts can see a massive change in their breasts, providing them with a younger and more refreshed appearance."
