More Patients Exploring Short-Scar Breast Reduction, Reports NY Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Mihye Choi

In the past, when a woman was dealing with troublesome, large breasts, her only real option was an anchor or "Wise pattern" breast reduction. Today, New York plastic surgeon, Dr. Mihye Choi, is finding a growing number of patients exploring a cutting-edge alternative to this traditional procedure: a short-scar technique.
"Women with overly large breasts tend to complain of several common complications including back pain, poor posture, breathing problems and low self-esteem," explains Dr. Choi. "Thankfully, modern cosmetic surgery offers an effective, permanent solution: breast reduction surgery." The procedure works to remove excess breast tissue and restore a more proportionate bustline.
"In years past, however, a woman's only option was an anchor-pattern procedure, which tended to result in significant scarring," explains Dr. Choi. "Today, we're finding a growing number of women opting for an alternative method known as a short-scar breast reduction." The short-scar technique uses a vertical incision and an incision around the areola, eliminating the need for a horizontal incision.
Asked to speak on the benefits of this approach, Dr. Choi offered this: "The short-scar technique offers several important advantages," explains Dr. Choi. "This includes less post-surgical scarring and often, a shapelier bustline."
Of course, not everyone is a candidate for the procedure. Dr. Choi explained that ideal candidates tend to be those who do not require extensive tissue removal. For those with excessive fat and breast tissue, a traditional breast reduction is often the better option.
Asked to speak on the growing popularity of the short scar technique, Dr. Choi concluded with this: "In the end, we want our breast reduction patients to understand and explore all their plastic surgery options. Part of that is finding out whether they're a good candidate for a short-scar procedure."
About Dr. Choi
Dr. Mihye Choi, a board certified plastic surgeon in Manhattan, is highly respected and well-known. Her practice focuses on face, breast and body plastic surgery, and she has been featured in numerous publications.
Board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Choi graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1987. She completed her general surgery training at Harvard Beth Israel Hospital. This was followed with plastic surgery residency at Mount Sinai Hospital, a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and a hand surgery fellowship at NYU Medical Center.
Dr. Choi joined the Faculty at the Institute of Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery at New York University School of Medicine in 1998. Last year, with Dr. Nolan Karp, she was the Co-Program Director of the NYU sponsored meeting, "Breast Reconstruction: State of the Art."
