It has been reported that Tesco store in Covent Garden has a serious mouse problem, as discovered by on-site health inspectors. This demonstrates that commercial pest control is imperative even for the larger companies who have stores throughout London.
Tesco have reacted saying that they are extremely concerned by the findings. Health inspectors found a serious infestation at Tesco Metro in Covent Garden, but this could be because they also discovered that the store had 'dirty conditions'.
The store has been ordered to close until it has benefitted from a thorough clean up, it has also been instructed to take pest control measures to prevent another infestation.
Tesco has apologised to their customers for not meeting high customer standards. Westminster Council's food and health officials have released a statement stating that they treat the larger organisations the same as smaller traders where public health is concerned.
Akeel Jaffar from HLA Pest Control Services in London says:
"This incident shows that even a large multi-national store is not immune to the effects of mice infestations and commercial pest control is essential. It doesn't matter how large your corporation, mice only care about food and shelter, and will find anywhere enticing regardless of the sign above the door. The fact that the premises were deemed dirty just goes to show what caused the problem in the first place, because if food has been left around this will attract mice, and once they take up residence in your premises they will start to breed and prove difficult to remove. The best solution is to operate a clean, hygienic store, and block any holes through which mice can fit to deter them from entering in the first place."
