Merise is a friend of every South African settled in Ozzie Land, and yearning to connect with fellow South Africans

Australia remains the favorite of South Africans looking to settle outside their country. The cultural similarities and common influence make it easy for them to adapt. But as they popularly say 'Africa is your blood. You can leave Africa, but the Africa in you, won't leave you!' For all expatriates living in Australia and longing to meet fellow people, the Merise magazine is here!

"Merise is every South African Australian's friend and family member. It represents their aspirations of improving their life. Even the name is symbolic; Merise can be divided into two words ME & RISE, thereby showing their desire to rise above their situation in this new country," says Suzette Van der Heijden of Merise Media. Through her Africaans magazine in Perth, Suzette aims to stand in support of her fellow people; not just newcomers but all those South Africans in Australia and New Zealand.

The magazine aims to help people understand everything about immigrating to Australia; right from the immigration process to adjusting the cultural differences, and surviving in Ozzie Land. Merise is bilingual; you can either choose to buy in English or buy the magazine in Afrikaans.

"Immigration is indeed tough, as you are forced to adjust to a new set of friends, family and atmosphere. Being an immigrant, I faced the exact same problems that any migrant from South Africa would face. I was often torn between my love for South Africa and my acceptance of Australia. It took a lot of courage to get out of my comfort zone and ask for help-sometimes for the smallest of things such as asking for directions. But having learned the ropes quickly I decided to help fellow South African migrants in Australia," adds Suzette.

But as earlier said, Merise isn't only about the newcomers, it's also for those who've settled comfortably, but still yearn for people with whom they can talk about their beloved South Africa. They can discuss about their South African food, music, and everything South African.
