Those seeking information about eating disorders, whether for themselves, a loved one or a patient, are encouraged to use the self-assessment as the first step toward a healthier lifestyle that results from anorexia or bulimia treatment.
October 2010 – There are 22 statements on Casa Palmera’s self-assessment for eating disorder treatment. They range from “I have eating habits that are different from those of my family and friends” to the more straightforward, “I have uncontrollable eating binges during which I consume large amounts of food and afterwards I make myself vomit.” Potential clients are asked to choose honestly from the following responses: often, sometimes, rarely and never. Once submitted, Casa Palmera scores the self-assessment and provides a response of its own, one that states not only whether the potential patient might need eating disorder treatment, but also what kind: anorexia treatment or bulimia treatment.
For example, those scoring a 38 or less on the self-assessment have strong tendencies toward anorexia, while those scoring 39 to 50 have strong tendencies toward bulimia. Those scoring 50 to 60 are placed in the weight-conscious category as someone who may or may not have eating disorder tendencies. And those who score 60 or higher are extremely unlikely to need anorexia or bulimia treatment, according to the eating disorder treatment self-assessment.
The response sent with the score suggests a step for each range. For example, those scoring 50 to 60 are encouraged to discuss their eating habits with a counselor, pastor, teacher or physician, to determine whether help is needed. Those scoring lower than 50 are encouraged to take the next step toward eating disorder treatment, whether it be anorexia treatment or bulimia treatment.
