Indoor Cycling & Spinning® Instructors Get App’d

Becoming the first app specifically designed for instructors in the fitness industry, Class Builder™ creates a way for Indoor Cycling or Spinning® Instructors to use their iPod or iPhone for much more than just class music. Everything from simple target intensity levels in RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) to advanced training with Heart Rate, Cadence and Power can be built into the class, with the class profile (or intensity levels) displayed on the big screen through an additional cable available from Ap

Pittsburgh, PA, August 17, 2011 -- You’ve heard the expression “There’s probably an app for that.” With Apple charging towards a half million apps in the App Store as its next mobile milestone, it becomes more than noteworthy when a new app is invented that is the “first” in its field. Today’s release of Class Builder™ however appears to be just that app.

That being said, recognizing that the target users are only Indoor Cycling or Spinning® instructors, one can surmise that the market size alone was probably the reason this application was not yet represented, and likewise explains the higher than usual price tag of $19.99. Nevertheless, a new addition to an otherwise crowded marketplace is just the sort of innovation Apple needs to keep the mobile momentum going.

The company (Cycling Fusion™) is already in the business of supplying health and fitness clubs with virtual cycling DVDs, instructor certification programs, and other products that focus on this vertical market. It was natural for them to build on the fact that 95% of all group cycling instructors use an iPod of some kind to play the music that drives their classes.

“We not only supply the indoor market with a lot of training tools and resources, but we are also still actively involved in training instructors and teaching Spinning® or Indoor Cycling classes ourselves. We emphasize the importance of thinking through the objectives of each class, and then testing that the details and drills support the end goals before putting any new class into a teaching rotation. Instructors who took that to heart would inevitably have papers or 3 X 5 cards to help guide them through both testing as well as the first few times they would conduct a new class. It only seemed logical that we could create something to assist them in that process.” said Gene Nacey, designer of Class Builder™.

Mr. Nacey’s previous career was in software design and implementation, and it becomes clear that experience has influenced the development of this new app. Despite it boasting to be all of ones music and notes in one convenient device, he made sure to include a printing option for those who would still prefer the touch and feel of paper as they taught. The difference is however, that the paper is used more during the building and editing phase, and then is no longer needed as the class becomes settled into a solid, completed lesson.

Another feature that reflects the experienced designer is the inclusion of projection capabilities. Class Builder™ has been optimized for delivery to a projector via the Apple iPod/IPad to VGA Converter Cable. While the cable is another $40 or so, it is conceivable that each health club could buy just one and have it available for all instructors who teach there, thus off-loading the cost to the establishment. After all, it is their members who will be enjoying an entirely graphical representation of the class at no extra charge.

“The idea actually came to us while working on another app for heart rate and power monitoring. As an alternative to expensive, hardware intensive systems that display everyone’s heart rate up on the screen, we created some proof of concepts to show that we could display heart rate (and eventually power when the communication protocols get built into the indoor bikes) without the additional hardware. Consequently, the “ah ha” moment came pretty quickly after that - allowing the instructor to share the one thing everyone wants to see - a profile of the class - not only before class so they know what they are getting into, but during class to keep them focused and motivated.” said Mark Dalrymple, lead developer of Class Builder™

Perhaps the icing on the cake for the instructor intrigued by this new teaching tool is that the company has already created over a dozen videos; some showing the application in use, and others in the form of 1 to 3 minute tutorials covering very specific feature sets and the details of how to use the product.

Now, at least as it relates to Spinning® and Indoor Cycling instruction, there really IS an app for that.
