Continuing with our AskMBAUniverse.com Live Chat series we held another live chat for all CAT 2011 aspirants on Thursday, August 11, 2011 with Vinayak Kudva, Product Head, IMS Learning. He provided detailed answers to the all the queries. Today we bring to you the highlights of the chat:

Maithri: Sir what should be the next step for CAT after the pattern has changed? As I am preparing myself, will coaching, Mock tests help me to understand new pattern?

A. You need to practice such that you are able to complete a section within stipulated time limit. If you used take nearly equal time for verbal and quant sections earlier, you should be able to do it. If not, then you must work towards the same. Fundamentals of preparation (concepts, types of questions) essentially remain same.

Tulika: I want to practice more questions on DI. As in new pattern DI is combined with Quant, will this help me?

A. Hi Tulika. The change in CAT structure should be good news for you. With the first section now comprising a mix of Quant and DI, as you can now neutralize your weakness in DI with your strong Quant areas. With 70 minutes for this section, you will now get more time for solving the quant questions along with the "easier" DI questions.

Rashmi: Please suggest how important is verbal ability, if I got a good score in Quant and DI?

A. You need to clear cut offs in both the section as well as the overall cut off. Hence verbal ability (which is clubbed with logical reasoning) is extremely important.

Diwakar: As per the new updated CAT format, what kind of questions that verbal and logical reasoning section would be comprised of?

A. Question types remain the same. So you'll have questions similar to what was there in earlier CATs ... Just that grouping of questions has changed. Verbal ability will mostly include RC, Critical Reasoning, Grammar & Vocab. Logical reasoning will include analytical reasoning and logical puzzles. So the question types remain the same

Raja: I am an IT Professional. Preparing for CAT IRMA and IIFT, they all have now different pattern and slightly change in Syllabus, when CAT Pattern has changed, I am in dilemma.

A: Hi Raja: while the test structures are different, the two areas assessed in each of these tests are still the same: math and english (IRMA/IIFT also have an additional GK section). If you prepare for CAT, you should be in a good position to ace the Math and Verbal based sections of the other tests including IRMA and IIFT. the only additional preparation you will need is for General Awareness - which you can achieve by being constantly in touch with the current affairs. Apart from this taking 3 to 4 practice tests based on the test you are preparing for will help you fine-tune your test taking strategy for these tests.

Manoj: Should I quit other exams and concentrate on only CAT or any other planning would help me?

A. It is suggested that you give other exams also (like XAT, FMS etc), though CAT should be the main focus.

Akash: Sir, suggest some paper attempting plan according to the new pattern , do we need to give more focus?

A. The two sections will be timed and you won't have too much flexibility in the order you attempt questions (compared to previous years). Answering questions correctly becomes more important than any particular "attempting plan", and that would require good fundamentals.

Arun: Sir, just want to know whether there will be equal weight age for both LR and VA or VA will be given more weightage?

A. VA is likely to have more questions than LR. However, this doesn't mean that LR is not important as doing well in both question types might increase your chances of clearing he cut offs
