Athlete, rehabilitation professional, business owner, motivational speaker, family man: Burns achieved all of these things since he completed a 5-month spinal-cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation program at Lucerne Spinal Center in Orlando 29 years ago. And over the years, Burns has relied on SPORTS ‘N SPOKES magazine as a motivational tool, reference point for his racing career, as well as a resource for setting goals in his career outside of sports.

Burns competed internationally as a wheelchair racer until 2004, and was featured in 15 consecutive issues of SPORTS ‘N SPOKES over the course of his sports career. However, his greatest achievement in racing came in 1992 as he accepted a gold medal at the Barcelona Paralympics for the 4x400 relay.

“It’s an amazing honor to be featured within S’NS as a role model for younger generations of SCI individuals. I hope they’ll take the same approach to using S’NS as a resource and tool for success, and I would love to help with any questions that younger racers may have,” says Burns.

About Life After Spinal Cord Injury

Bert Burns became quadriplegic as a result of an automobile accident during his youth. His desire to make a positive difference in the lives of people with disabilities led him to create a free motivational program for peer support and rehabilitation groups called Life After Spinal Cord Injury. In 2010, the free, nonprofit program helped more than 600 medical professionals, patients, former patients, and family members with information, advice, and encouragement. LASCI expects to more than double that number in 2011. LASCI is sponsored by UroMed, [http://www.uromed.com] one of the largest urological supply companies in the country.
