Cryogenic Adhesives & Coatings And Mastics: Adhesives In Hostile Environment

Cryogenic adhesives and coatings are very necessary to ensure smooth and hassle free operation of equipments and fittings in cryogenic environments which is otherwise very hostile environment.

Cryogenic adhesives and coatings are designed for excellent performance at cryogenic as well as very high temperatures. These adhesives and coatings are use for operations in aerospace or on earth. As the name suggests cryogenic adhesives and coatings are engineered for application and for withstanding very low temperatures. Cryogenic adhesives and coatings are used to seal cryogenic containers used in experimental medical applications. These are also used when it is required to put superconducting electronic components and the usual sensors on cryogenic structures. Cryogenic adhesives and coatings are also used to stick thermal insulation material on the surfaces of cryogenic tanks and vessels. In case of super conducting magnets and the related equipment and wiring which requires high quality electrical insulation, cryogenic adhesives and coatings are used to provide necessary insulation. In cryogenic operations many a times the pipes cannot be joined by conventional methods like welding or even mechanically tied with each other. In such cases cryogenic adhesives and coatings are used to join and then seal these pipes. All cryogenic adhesives and coatings are manufactured according to strict norms and standards as the field of application is related to cryogenic environments like super conducting coils, testing facilities, labs, cryogenic containers, magnetic fusion generators, etc which are very critical in nature. Some of the common attributes of these cryogenic adhesives and coatings are:

a. Light in weight. This results in a very high strength to weight ratio
b. Ability to withstand high strain at cryogenic temperatures
c. Considerable durability even in adverse environments
d. Excellent at very high temperatures
e. Even poorly prepared surfaces can be adhered together

Monocoat mastic is a coating used to provide fire resistance and create a vapor barrier. Monocoat mastics are required to have good elastic properties and are engineered to possess high physical strength. This prevents cracking or tearing or the monocoat mastic surfaces due to the repeated contraction and expansion of the mastic due to cooling and heating of the surface. It can also be used to provide protection to insulated pipes, containers, etc. The monocoat mastic is also designed to be inert to the common chemical deterrents and also to be resistant to puncture stress.

Foster mastics are basically used to provide protection against micro organisms on surfaces just like strong disinfectants. Foster mastics provide a long term solution against both gram positive and gram negative micro organisms. This is the reason that foster mastics are used widely to ensure a good indoor air quality by coating on the inner surfaces of air handling systems. Foster mastics are not only resistant against micro organisms; they inhibit the growth of molds. Foster mastics come in textures and finishes that give a good visual experience.
