"Scott Country puts the new Pulsar Recon R through its paces in this review of Pulsar's brand new hand held Night Vision monocular with built in recording facility."

Introducing the new Pulsar Recon R 550 Digital Night Vision Monocular

The New Pulsar Recon R Digital Night Vision Monocular is unlike any other night vision device we have seen as it not only is day light safe, but it offers a built in onboard recording facility using an SD memory card.

The Recon R also uses a state of the art image intensification system with built in High Power Infrared.

Traditional Gen 1, Gen 2 and Gen 3 Nightvision can only be used in complete darkness and featured a grainy green image which we have all seen on spy movies.

Digital Night Vision is intrinsically different from traditional Night Vision as it does not rely on a fragile image intensifier to enhance night time images.

Image intensifiers are very susceptible to damage from bright light sources and therefore can only be used in complete darkness.

The Digital Difference

Digital Night Vision does not rely on this old technology, as it uses state of the art CCD and image processing to process night time images into a bright and clear black and white image.

Digital Night Vision can also be used during the day, which opens up all possibilites with weapon sights, as historically you have had to zero your rifle in darkness, and this isn't an easy task.

The Pulsar Recon R features a variable image enhancement system which allows you to scroll through Black and White, High Contrast Black and White, Green and Red viewing.

Green screens as found in traditional Night vision was often thought to be the best colour for eyes to view at night, now you can have the best of both in the digital world.

The Recon R can be used in complete darkness by powering up the onboard Infra Red system which will illuminate subjects out to 250meters.

Pulsar's Recording facility

The Pulsar Recon R has a built in recording facility.

Simply insert the supplied SD card, and you can record video footage or stills of everything that you see.

You can then connect the Recon to a TV or a computer and review the footage you have captured. Or you can simply replay the footage on the Recon's screen.

This is fantastic for reviewing night time safari trips or for security applications such as watching poachers.

Using your Recon R as a wildlife trail camera

The Recon R has an innovative Motion Detection system built into the device.

Simply select the Motion Detect menu and set the device to record.

As soon as a moving object appears in the field of view recording starts automatically and when the object moves out of the field of view the device stops recording.

This is ideal for wildlife monitoring or for security applications, and as the infra red is invisible, wildlife will not be aware they are being captured on film.

Video clips and images captured are saved to the SD memory card which can be up to 4Gb and will produce up to 13hours of footage, ideal for a night time surviellance operation.
