Brisbane’s ‘Comic Mummy’ aka Jenny Wynter launches her all-new improvised comedy ensemble at Tribal Theatres (the old Dendy Cinemas) on Friday November 26.

Jenny, who has performed across Australia, Canada and the USA and was described by LA Musical Improv Director Michael Pollock as “a genius”, says that the idea behind her new ensemble – titled Gumball Theatre – was simple.

“While I love the audience interaction element of live improvised comedy i.e. when the audience suggests ideas, I wanted to do something a little different than just asking for things verbally. Then one day, I found an old gumball machine in a garage sale and immediately went: ‘that’s it! Gumball Theatre!’ The idea being that the audience can place suggestions in the gumball machine before the show, then the improvisers draw them out onstage to inspire scenes. Plus, you know, I just really like gumballs.”

Jenny says that ultimately she hopes the ensemble will become as strong and well-known as the companies she has trained and performed with abroad. “In North America, improvised comedy is just huge. I mean, you think of some of the biggest names in comedy today - almost all of them have at least some of their roots in improv.”

“Over there it’s really set up to nurture that talent to its full potential – the training is so thorough and as a result, the shows are really tight, consistently funny and of course, showcase the performers to go on and up from there. That’s ultimately what I’m going for. Just with fewer Saturday Night Live scouts in the audience.”
